    A OK

Stress and adrenal function is probably Ok right now.
  • STRESS

    HMMM

There's some signs of adrenal and nervous sytem stress - you might want to get that checked out.
  • STRESS

    Warning

There's multiple signs of adrenal and nervous system stress here - if you don't get it checked out it could lead to other issues.
  • STRESS

    Major issues

There could be some serious adrenal dysfunciton here. Your adrenals need some loving right now!
  • STRESS

    Whoa!!

Your stress response is through the roof! This is a major cause of illness, so you need to get this sorted out.

  • Stress and health

Your report shows that your body is stressed. Stress is a word that means many different things. You might be ‘stressed’ in a certain situation – either physically or emotionally. In your body ‘stress’ is defined as a biochemical process that occurs to help your body deal with what it perceives as stress. When we are stressed our flight- or -fight response is activated. During this response your body is in survival mode and all of the energy is diverted into your brain and muscles to get away from that predator (which these days is usually a lurking deadline). During flight-or-fight mode your digestive system and reproductive system both get down-regulated – which is why stress can lead to digestive issues and hormonal problems.

    Your adrenal glands

Your adrenal glands are 2 small crescent shaped glands that sit right on top of your kidneys. When you are stressed, your adrenal glands pump out a hormone called cortisol, which helps you deal with the stress. Unfortunately though, when we are exposed to long term or frequent stress our cortisol levels can become out of balance. Cortisol may be depleted which leads to fatigue and lack of mental acuity. Cortisol may become high which leads to anxiety and sleep issues. And to make matters worse they can be low and high in the same day, at times that are inappropriate (hello exhausted but can’t sleep at night).

  • How can you help reduce stress and support adrenal health?

Thankfully there is a lot you can do to help with stress levels. Our naturopaths prescribe herbal adaptogens (herbs that help improve your stress response) and adrenal restoratives (these give you back your mojo) as well as looking at supporting your stress through nutrition.

Acupuncturists help the stress response by working on balancing the flow of chi (energy), in particular looking at the kidney and adrenal function and how that relates to what else is happening for you.
Our emotional wellness team are also stress management experts, particularly when it comes to those that put high expectations on themselves and stress themselves out even over small matters. Stress and mood problems often go together so you need to consider what is driving the stress internally (moods, self beliefs, self-expectations), as well as externally (too high workload, poor time management, not enough rest).

  • Emotional turmoil

It looks like there may be some emotional turmoil going on that could be impacting on your health. Our emotions are formed based on our individual personality traits, our life history and most importantly of all what we have stored in our subconscious minds. Only 10% of that you think and store in your brain is conscious – the remaining 90% is unconscious. It is our unconscious mind that drives our self-beliefs and colours the way that we perceive life. Although consciously you may know that your emotional reactions are unwarranted and try to control them – subconsciously there will be a reason that you act and feel the way that you do.

Our emotional wellness team are subconscious whisperers – they specialize in helping to discover the root cause of emotional distress and release the emotions attached to it. This type of therapy can provide dramatic change in how you’re feeling and really improve your life.

    HMMM

There are a few things you're consuming that might be contributing to disease here - get some advice.
  • DIETARY TOXINS

    Warning

Your diet and lifestyle need an overhaul!
  • DIETARY TOXINS

    Major issues

If your diet and drink intake remains the same, you are at high risk of health problems.
  • DIETARY TOXINS

    Whoa!!

You need some help to overhaul your diet! Book in with a nutritionist or naturopath now!

  • Foods can harm or heal

When you consume anything, food or drink, it has the ability to harm you or heal you. Most of the disease that happens is a result of poor dietary choices. Healthy eating is about avoiding foods that contribute to illness as well as including lots of foods that prevent disease.
In a nutshell, foods that heal are:
    • Fruit and vegetables
    • Legumes
    • Nuts and seeds and their cold pressed oils
    • Organic meat, chicken and eggs
    • Whole grains

And foods that harm, when eating too regularly are:
    • Processed grains
    • White bread, white rice, white crackers
    • Sugary foods – chocolate and sweets
    • Biscuits, cakes and pastries
    • Deep fried foods
    • Intensively farmed meat and dairy

    Every person is an individual

Diet is such a personal thing – the most important thing is to eat right for your body type. Some people do better without dairy or wheat, and some thrive when eating more plant based meals.
There is lots of misinformation out there about what is healthy and what is not. Checking in with a nutritionist or naturopath is the best way to get advice on what to eat that is tailored to what you need.

  • Health foods in disguise

You indicated that you consume margarine or low fat yoghurt. Although these are sold as health foods, they are actually processed and are a contributor to illness. Margarine is a chemical cocktail made with cheap oil that is detrimental to health. Low fat dairy intake has been associated with infertility and is often very high in sugar and additives. There are more examples like this in our clinic founder Katherine Maslen’s book – Get Well, Stay Well.
Studies show that saturated fats are not unhealthy, so if you’re consuming these products opt for butter and full fat dairy instead.

  • Sugar is the root of modern disease

Your report indicates you’re having sugary foods. Although saturated fats often get demonized, refined sugar is in fact the main cause of illness in our society. Sugar intake is associated with heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and many other conditions. Although you might find sugar in common foods such as treats or baked goods, you also need to look out for them in foods like yoghurt, bread, crackers, cereal and canned foods.

  • Soft drinks

You said that you consume some soft drinks (soda). Any type of soft drink is detrimental to health – if it has sugar then it causes disease. Diet soft drinks have toxic artificial sweeteners that have been shown to increase cancer risk and even contribute to diabetes. Try having some soda water or mineral water with a squeeze of lemon or lime instead.

  • NUTRIENT DEFICIENCY

    A OK

Well done - you're eating and absorbing most of what you need to be healthy.
  • NUTRIENT DEFICIENCY

    HMMM

You're getting in most things that you need but there is room for improvement!
  • NUTRIENT DEFICIENCY

    Warning

You're doing OK but there are some vital food groups missing that are need to prevent disease, or you may not be absorbing them.
  • NUTRIENT DEFICIENCY

    Major issues

Your diet is lacking in some key nutrients that are there to support your health, and you may be suffering from maldigestion.
  • NUTRIENT DEFICIENCY

    Whoa!!

There is no-where near enough disease preventing food in your diet and your absorption is poor! Seek some help from a nutritionist or naturopath.

  • Your mother told you to eat your veggies – you should have listened.

Your report indicates that you’re not eating enough fruit and vegetables. Vegetables, and especially green leafy vegetables – have amazing health properties that may stop you from getting sick. They are rich in nutrients and phytochemicals that are antioxidants and prevent disease throughout the body.

Eating veggies shouldn’t be boring – they are some of the tastiest foods on earth! Try snacking on some celery, carrot or cucumber with some dip, eating more avocado, upping the veg with dinner or making a green smoothie. Having a small side salad with a cooked meal will also help to up your intake.

  • Omega 3 deficiency

Your report shows that you’re not getting enough omega 3 in your diet. Omega 3 is an essential fatty acid that is needed for brain health, hormonal health, to reduce inflammation in the body and to prevent cardiovascular disease. You need to up your intake by consuming more sardines, salmon, kangaroo (yes – because Skippy jumps around he has higher omega 3 levels), chia seeds, flaxseeds and walnuts.

  • EFA Deficiency

Your report indicates that you may be low in essential fatty acids (EFAs). EFAs are needed to support healthy cell membranes, hormonal health, to keep skin supple and for fat soluble vitamin absorption. EFAs are found in good fats like nuts and seeds, avocado, coconut oil and milk and cold pressed olive oil.

  • Mineral deficiency

Your report indicates that you could be low in essential minerals. Not eating nuts and seeds regularly is a major cause of this. To up mineral content eat nuts and seeds regularly as well as organic meats, dates, figs and a wide range of vegetables.

  • Low intake of Vitamin C

Your report indicates that you could be low in vitamin C. Vitamin C is only found in fresh foods such as fruit and some salads as heat destroys most vitamin C in cooked and packaged food. Make sure you’re eating 2 serves of fresh fruit every day.

  • Maldigestion of nutrients

Your report shows that you show signs of maldigestion. If your digestive system is not functioning well, then you will not be able to absorb the nutrients from your food, leading to depletion even if you are eating the right things.
Signs of digestive insufficiency include bloating, burping, reflux, wind and sometimes other digestive symptoms like diarrhea and constipation. Our naturopaths are experts in digestive health and can look into any digestive issues to make sure you’re absorbing your nutrients well.

  • Dysbiosis

Your report show that you have bloating, which can be caused by a dysbiosis – an imbalance between the good and bad fungi and bacteria that line your gut. You have three times more bacterial cells in your gut than you have cells in your body. An imbalance in their delicate balance can occur from antibiotic use (not necessarily recent either), alcohol and sugar intake, lack of fibre and even stress. Consult with a naturopath to get tested and treated for dysbiosis.

  • ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS

    A OK

Great! It looks like the toxicity levels you're exposed to are pretty low.
  • ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS

    HMMM

It looks like there are a couple of sources of toxins that could be contributing to illness.
  • ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS

    Warning

There's a concerning amount of toxins that you're being exposed to that could contribute to illness.
  • ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS

    Major issues

There are multiple things that you're being exposed to that have widespread health detriments. Seek some help from a naturopath to learn how to clean up your environment.
  • ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS

    Whoa!!

You're being exposed to a large amount of toxins each day, which have been associated with causing multiple diseases. Seek help from a naturopath now.

  • Toxicity and health

A toxin is any substance that can cause disharmony and disease in the body. In our modern world we are exposed to a huge array of toxins each and every day. It is the cumulative effect of these toxins, along with a poor diet, which has lead to the deterioration of our health.

  • Bisphenol-A (BPA)

Your report shows that you are getting exposed to BPA. BPA is an endocrine disrupting chemical that is found in many types of plastic. It has been associated with infertility, endometriosis, hypertension, cancer and learning impairment in children. If you have any type of hormonal problem then it is imperative that you avoid this chemical by not using plastic bottles and containers for your food and drink.

  • Phthalates and parabens

Your report shows that you may be exposed to phthalates and parabens. Phthalates are found in any conventional shampoo, conditioner, soap, body wash, moisturizer, perfume or other personal care product that lists ‘fragrance’ on the label. Parabens are used in many products as a preservative and are labeled methylparaben, propyl-paraben or other compounds ending in –paraben. Phthalates and parabens have been linked to breast cancer, infertility and other hormonal issues. Use natural products only to avoid absorbing these chemicals.

  • The importance of eating organic

Your report shows that you’re eating less than 50% of your diet from organic sources. Unless your food is certified organic, it will contain varying amounts of pesticides. Pesticides act like a slow form of poison in the body, disrupting your endocrine system and contributing to disease. There are certain foods that are higher in pesticides that need to be avoided and every year the Environmental Working Group in the US tests fruit and veggies to see which are highest and lowest in pesticides. Head to the EWG website to see what the latest report on pesticides in fruit and veggies shows.

  • Avoiding commercial antibiotics

Your report shows that you’re consuming animal products that may contain traces of antibiotics. Antibiotic intake through animal meat can disrupt your gut flora. In Australia, two-thirds of the antibiotics that are brought into the country are destined for the meat industry. Eating certified organic or free-range, antibiotic free meat and dairy is the best way to avoid these.

  • You need to love your liver

Your report shows that your liver may not be functioning at its best. Your liver is like the checkout at the supermarket – everything needs to pass through it in order to leave your body. Nearly every hormone, chemical and toxin will need your liver to remove it from your body. Drinking less alcohol and coffee and avoiding toxins in the environment such as plastics, non-natural skin and personal care and paint or car fumes can help to take the burden off your liver. The liver loves green leafy veggies and sour fruits like lemons that help it to increase the flow of bile from the gall bladder – an important route of detoxification.

  • How do the signs of toxicity manifest?

A toxin is usually a contributing factor to illness rather than an outright cause, which is why it can be difficult to see the being a problem. For disease to occur the condition in the body must be just right. It might involve a certain genetic predisposition, which is brought out by malnutrition, high stress and excessive toxin burden. Or it may be that being high in endocrine disrupting chemicals is enough to push your hormones out of balance – the body not being able to correct itself while they remain in your system.

Signs that your toxic load is increasing can include headaches or migraines, bad skin, fatigue, nausea or hormonal imbalance. Toxins are an important part of your health picture; check in with a naturopath to help you identify where they might be coming from but also to help your detoxification organs to work effectively.

  • LACK OF MOVEMENT

    A OK

It looks like you're moving your body enough to avoid illness - well done!
  • LACK OF MOVEMENT

    HMMM

You're moving your body a little bit, but probably not enough to stay healthy.
  • LACK OF MOVEMENT

    Warning

You're not moving your body enough - moving more would prevent disease.
  • LACK OF MOVEMENT

    Major issues

If you keep at your current level of activity your risk of disease will remain high.
  • LACK OF MOVEMENT

    Whoa!!

You need to move it! At this rate of activity your risk of disease is significantly increased.

  • Movement and health

Moving your body is a normal part of your physiology. Many body processes – including your digestion, lymphatic function and detoxification all rely on movement.

  • Sedentary lifestyle and health

Your report shows that you are more sedentary than you should be. Your body is designed to move – but our modern lifestyles discourage movement. We’re sitting more often than not – while we’re eating, on our way to work, all day at work, on the way home and even after work while were in front of the TV. We park as close to the shop as possible so we don’t have to walk for an extra minute!

Start thinking about how you can add more movement into you days – walk to work or to the train station, take a walk on your lunch break, sit on a fit ball and move around while you’re sitting and take the stairs whenever you have the opportunity!

  • Exercise and health

Your report shows that you exercise less than 3 times per week. Without exercise, your blood won’t get to all the nooks and crannies in the body that it needs to. You’ll be more toxic and your have lower levels of feel good endorphins that keep you happy.

Normally a lack of exercise is not from a lack of knowing one has to, but rather a lack of motivation or energy. Think about what exercise you like to do. It could be running, swimming, joining a sporting team, yoga, dancing or bush walking. Get creative and go out and do it – don’t listen to the voice in your head that tells you it’s too hard.

Often the lack of motivation to exercise can be helped by our emotional wellness team, by helping you remove the subconscious blocks that stop you from getting started.
