Shift Naturopath

Vaughn Ryan is an experienced Brisbane acupuncturist that his patients describe as warm, caring and down to earth. Vaughn has spent most of his practice history in Sydney where he has worked with thousands of patients over the last 9 years to restore balance and ultimately their health using acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Recently Vaughn moved back to Brisbane with his wife and kids to be closer to his family, and we were fortunate enough to have brought him onto the Brisbane Natural Health team.

Vaughn’s style of acupuncture is very gentle. The needles used are so fine that pain is extremely rare. Your acupuncture treatment will actually be incredibly relaxing, leaving you feeling like you’re walking out on a cloud.

Vaughn has worked with most conditions in his career but has a particular interest in fertility, musculoskeletal complaints, hormonal issues and digestive problems. Acupuncture helps to restore a state of balance in the body, and therefore may help with nearly any condition. If you’re unsure, you can book a complimentary 15min chat with one of our acupuncturists to determine if it will be able to help you.

We asked Vaughn some questions about being an acupuncturist…

  1. Why did you become an acupuncturist?

For me, I feel like I was destined to become an acupuncturist. My life has been heavily influenced by past generations and elders in my family which includes herbal medicine, eastern philosophy and energy healing.

When I was young I started to passionately follow yoga and meditation and found that it really centred my life and gave me focus. After meeting an exceptional Acupuncturist when I lived in London many years ago, who I called “The Master” I was able to experience the full benefits of Acupuncture and witness its amazing effects. It was then that I decided to pursue a career in the form of medicine that has amazing healing potential.

After becoming an Acupuncturist I found an amazing mentor in Ross Penman, renown Sydney acupuncturist. My style of acupuncture is gentle and not overcomplicated. Early on in my career, I made a conscious decision, under the guidance of my mentor Ross Penman, to define this style of acupuncture. I treat by using the internal environment, coupled with the external environment to influence change in the body”

  1. When did you graduate? What degree?

After 5 years of full-time study, I graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Health Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine and an Advanced Diploma in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

  1. What has been your practice history?

I have over 9 years of clinical experience as an Acupuncturist and Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner. This includes almost 4 years in a busy multi-disciplinary clinic in Sydney’s north-west as they principal acupuncturist and herbalist. Over the past 5 years, I have run my own Acupuncture practise in Sydney’s inner west, called Vaughn Ryan Acupuncture as well as working in a busy community clinic in Sydney’s beachside suburb of Bondi treating 20-30 patients per day. Working in the community clinic exposed me to hundreds of different conditions which helped me to be well versed in most conditions.

  1. How do you live the TCM philosophy in your own life?

TCM is based around the philosophy dating back over 2000 years. The philosophy encompasses every aspect of lifestyle including diet, exercise, meditation and yoga and I have incorporated each aspect in my life.

“Knowing other is intelligence;

knowing yourself is true wisdom.

Mastering others is strength;

mastering yourself is true power.”

  • Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching

I am a firm believer that in order for me to provide the best outcomes for my patients, i have to be the best person i can be. I am always looking for ways to learn and grow.

  1. What can someone expect when they come to see you?

I am committed to each person that walks through our doors. Returning them back to optimal health or assisting them with their health goals.

Your Acupuncture treatment is designed to be as RELAXING and COMFORTABLE as possible.

For your initial consultation Vaughn will take a comprehensive assessment of your health history and get a thorough understanding of your main concerns.

Vaughn will then take your pulse, and make an informed diagnosis based on the principles of Classical Acupuncture. Your treatment will then start with the insertion of fine, sterile needles into specific points along your energy channels.

Depending on your specific needs, Vaughn may also recommend and prescribe Chinese Herbal Medicine.

After each session, patients have reported feeling calm, a relief from areas of pain and an improvement of their symptoms. You will also notice the positive effects of your treatment in the days and weeks following.

  1. What do you love to do for fun?

Spending time with my beautiful young family and my wife. I love the beach and being in the ocean, and recently have loved taking my 4 year old son for his first fishing trip. I am a big consumer of podcasts and love listening to everything from conversations with Richard Fidler to On Being with Krista Tippett. If you have any great podcasts feel free to drop me a line and pass on the recommendation!
