Poor Sperm Morphology

Sperm morphology refers to the structure and integrity of sperm. A poor sperm morphology, or low percentage of normal sperm indicates that there are high numbers of abnormal sperm.

Poor sperm morphology is diagnosed with a semen analysis, so is often not picked up right away when fertility issues arise.

What causes poor sperm morphology?
Poor sperm morphology can be due to a number of reasons, but the most common is nutrient deficiencies, particularly those of folate, zinc, vitamin E and Selenium. Without sufficient nutrition sperm cannot be formed properly.

For sperm to survive, they need a nourishing environment. Sperm morphology can be affected by trauma to the testes such as heat (spas and saunas) and pressure (riding a bike or testicular injury).

Toxicity is another factor to consider when looking at sperm morphology. Toxins can accumulate in the body from the foods we eat and the air we breathe, but often for men their occupation is the largest source of toxins, with those in the building and construction industry, mechanics, morticians and any occupation involving chemical exposure being the highest at risk.

How can natural fertility care help?
Thankfully, there are many effective natural treatment options to help improve sperm morphology. After assessing your individual health Katherine may prescribe nutritional supplements and herbal medicines to work on the underlying causes of the poor morphology and to help promote healthy sperm formation. If you have a low sperm count this will also be addressed as part of your treatment plan.
