IVF and Fertility Acupuncture

Our fertility acupuncture Brisbane therapists are here to help

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the oldest healing systems on earth, originating in China thousands of years ago. It works by stimulating your meridians and particular points on the body with fine needles to boost your innate healing response and support your body to come back into balance. At Shift at Brisbane Natural Health, we have a specialist team of acupuncturists with years of experience.

For thousands of years, Chinese couples have used acupuncture for fertility. We’ve helped hundreds of couples in Brisbane get pregnant with the help of acupuncture outside of, as well as during, IVF cycles. Our experience at Shift at Brisbane Natural Health is that acupuncture prior to IVF can significantly increase your chance of falling pregnant through natural conception, and the science backs this up.

FAQs.

Your initial appointment will be $149 and follow-up appointments will be $125.

This depends on your individual needs, but most of our fertility patients will visit us every 1-2 weeks to help to balance and correct any issues.

At a very minimum, studies show getting acupuncture pre and post-embryo transfer or FET to be helpful. However, the effects of acupuncture are cumulative, which means you’ll gain the most benefit from coming even before you enter the cycle, if possible.

This depends on a number of things but yes, we have had a lot of success with patients not undergoing IUI and IVF with getting pregnant with the support of acupuncture.

Yes! As long as you have extras that cover acupuncture you can claim on the spot with HICAPs.

We have strong relationships with several fertility centres in Brisbane, and we can also work alongside your current specialist. If you need a referral to someone we can also offer some options.

You should never be in pain when you receive acupuncture at Brisbane Natural Health. We use a gentle Japanese style of acupuncture which uses very fine needles. Most patients leave feeling incredibly relaxed. Your comfort is our number one priority and the insertion of the needles should never be painful.

Absolutely! Our acupuncturists are trained in extensive reproductive and pregnancy techniques and your treatment will only support your pregnancy, not hinder it.

Techniques used during fertility acupuncture treatments

Our acupuncturists use specific fertility acupuncture techniques and have helped hundreds of Brisbane couples undergoing IVF to IUI to improve their chances of becoming pregnant. By stimulating specific points that are associated with reproductive organs, it is possible to promote the flow of qi, which means more balanced energies within the body. In other words, a more harmonious environment for conception. For more information head here.

How acupuncture works for fertility

The evidence behind IVF acupuncture

There have been several studies done on the link between fertility acupuncture and pregnancy. A study done in Germany in 2002 on a group of 160 women undergoing IVF and acupuncture treatment showed that 42% of the group had successful pregnancies – compared to 26% for just IVF. This was just the first of many such positive results; a later Danish study showed specifically that treatment on the day of the embryo transfer was best of conception. In early 2014, the NIH (US) published a comprehensive overview of acupuncture for fertility studies which concluded that there is significant data showing that pregnancy acupuncture can improve female reproductive functioning – future studies will hopefully determine exactly what mechanisms are involved.

Acupuncture has helped hundreds of our patients realise their dream of becoming pregnant.

How does it work?

There are specific times during your IVF cycle that acupuncture will be used, like pre and post-embryo transfer. Better still, having a period of treatment before your IVF cycle will allow the acupuncture time to affect the health of your ova (eggs) and improve quality, which further improves the likely hood of pregnancy. Our acupuncturists work alongside our fertility naturopaths to ensure that you are getting all of your nutritional requirements leading into your IVF cycle.

It takes two to tango!

Our fertility treatments are not just for women, either – acupuncture can also help improve male fertility by boosting both sperm count and motility. Motility means the ability of the sperm to move around; if they’re sluggish, they won’t be able to make it all the way to the egg. This means that older men, or those with diagnosed fertility issues, can use the treatment as a complementary treatment. Specific acupuncture points are used to unblock pathways and promote the kind of environment within the body that sperm need to develop properly. During your initial fertility acupuncture appointment, you will have plenty of opportunities to ask about the treatment strategy and how it’s designed to help promote your fertility.
