How A Walk in the Forest can Help Cure What Ails You

We’ve been hearing more and more about how getting out into nature can help to improve mood, reduce stress and promote overall good health. It makes a fair bit of sense that as humans have evolved with nature, and therefore our nervous systems may feel most ‘at home’ when we are amongst nature. But it seems that there is more to it than that. Studies are now showing that some of the compounds produced by the trees in the forests we walk
in have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, neuroprotective and antitumor effects. These compounds (forest aerosols) are excreted by our trees (in particular, conifer and camphor laurel trees) and we can be said to be ‘showering in them’ when we take a forest walk. Forest aerosols are being shown to have many beneficial effects on health in laboratory testing and may be the reason that walking in the forest has been shown to benefit asthma,
atopic dermatitis, immune health, cancer and nervous system health (Cho KS, 2017).  It is not only conifers and camphors but other plants such as lavender, citrus, hops, peppermint and chamomile that also contain these beneficial compounds. If anyone needed a reason to go for a walk in a lavender or chamomile field, here it is!

Other health benefits can be attributed to the production of a compound called brain- derived neurotrophic factor (or BDNF) when we exercise. BDNF promotes what we call ‘neuroplasticity’ which basically refers to the ability of brain cells to heal and create new connections as is seen in learning and healing from damage due to stress, depression or trauma. A reduction in BDNF is seen in neurodegenerative disorders such as dementia and has also been linked to major depression, stress, obesity and cardiovascular disease. In the case of BNDF, we do not need to be walking in the forest to promote its production – any exercise will do (but a forest walk is a great option if available). Studies show that moderate to high-intensity physical activity are the most effective in achieving the desired increase in BDNF (Phillips, 2017).

So why not make a regular walk in the forest part of your health regime? When you breathe in those delicious foresty smells you are taking your aerosol shower and providing your body with many healing agents. If you are sick, it may assist your healing process, and if you are not, it will certainly provide protection against some long-term health complaints.

So, get a map, pack a lunch, get a buddy and get out there!

Stress, Balance and Hypnosis

Feeling overwhelmed with never-ending to-do lists? Ruminating about problems at work? Doubting your ability to do the job? Sleeping badly? Not having the time to devote to your family? Are you drinking too much, not getting enough exercise…?

These are classic signs of modern-day stress.  Work stress. Home stress.  Health stress. –All have an effect and can nudge us towards coping mechanisms that are not always helpful.  More people are suffering from greater degrees of stress and not dealing with it effectively. Whether it’s junk food, alcohol or binge TV, we have become expert at not confronting the real issues at hand, resulting in an overloaded mind and body.

Understanding our stress, recognising its numerous symptoms and acquiring tools to process and deal with it is a vital part of managing the balancing act of work, life and family. Yet it is not always easy. More and more we are expecting to succeed in this juggling act and look good doing it on our social media platforms. It’s no wonder we develop unrealistic expectations!

One of the best antidotes to stress is to learn how to quieten our inner-critic and allow ourselves a healthy dose of self-compassion.  Learning to be kinder to ourselves, to not hold ourselves to harsh standards and to face up to past hurts and rejections are some of the keys to coping better in the workplace and in our relationships.

Learning to say “no” to other people’s demands on us is another area where we can begin to take back control. Sometimes when we involve ourselves in other people’s dramas, it adds to our own load of stress. Always putting others first and taking undue responsibility for other people’s problems can quite dramatically erode our own wellbeing.

Whether the stresses come from internal or external sources, are big or small, isolated in time or accumulated from countless repetition over the years, they can have a long-lasting and damaging effect.

We know that to maintain a healthy mind and body we need healthy food, plenty of sleep and regular exercise. However, when faced with the many and varied stresses noted above we need more. There can be real and tangible benefit from learning specific skills and developing our own tools to manage the stress in our lives.

Clinical Hypnotherapy at Brisbane Natural Health addresses the relationship between stress and your symptoms and can offer the tools to deal with your stress more effectively.

Hypnosis can allow you to learn the art of calm and how to regulate your stress responses. Hypnosis can help you to find different and more helpful perspectives, resolve inner-conflict and learn to manage and even to escape the often debilitating results of stress on the mind and body.

Just one session of clinical hypnotherapy can bring you benefit. One session can allow you to feel the myriad benefits of stress release experienced through your whole body. It can allow you to tap into your own inner resources to learn different and more helpful ways of managing the complexities of life.

The recipe to living a life you love.

Do you live a life you love? I mean really stop and think about it – are you completely happy and loving your life? Are you happy in your relationships, your job, where you live? Do you do things regularly that make your heart sing? Of course, we all aspire to live a life that we love, but it is all too easy to get caught up in the day to day, leading a less than ideal or mediocre life. This mean you might remain in a relationship or job that doesn’t light you up for longer than you should. Or it could mean that you haven’t cultivated enough self love to truly be happy day to day.

People who live a life they love eat well, workout regularly (because they want to), have strong relationships (including with themselves), enjoy their work and are happy most of the time. They get a lot of joy from life and look forward to the start of each day. They refuse to put up with a beige existence, knowing that life has a bounty to offer them if they find out where to look. We each have the ability to have this – it’s just a matter of peeling back the layers and giving your body, mind and soul what it needs to enhance your life.

After working with over 5000 people, we know that there is a recipe to having a life that you love. it includes the following.

1. Achieving excellent, vibrant health

Good health is the foundation to living a life that you love. When we have physical symptoms it causes pain, discomfort, worry and concern that can strip the joy from our day to day lives. It can stop you from behaving how you normally would, preventing you from doing what you love. It can even colour the way that you perceive the world through negative emotions, as you’ll see in the next section. Achieving excellent health is about eating the right foods, moving your body and healing disease with natural medicines, if possible. It’s also about mindset, as you’ll see in the steps following.

2. Working through emotional toxicity

People who live a life they love have been able to identify and release emotional toxicity that holds them back. This might be working through anxiety, depression or low self esteem by identifying the underlying subconscious causes and triggers. It might be identifying what emotions you have attached to and dis-ease in the body, and where it first started so that you can clear it. Your thought patterns and emotional state are a huge determinant of how you’re feeling and also what behaviour that you present. We all have some emotional toxicity to varying degrees and once you can identify this and work though it your life will be so much better.

We need to identify and release emotional toxicity in order to reach our full potential.

3. Cultivating gratitude and positivity

This step comes more easily once you have mastered the former, but it’s something that you can begin to work on right away. Studies (and ancient spiritual teachings) show that cultivating gratitude makes you happier and more content with life. This can be a simple as consciously and sincerely thanking people more often or keeping a daily gratitude journal. We also need to practice mindfulness – this is observing our thoughts so we can actively try to change them. We are taught to be inherently negative – especially towards ourself. Listen to your self talk – you’ll soon find that you would never speak to someone that way that you speak to yourself. Catch yourself and consciously try to think more positive. This might require more work on step 2 if you find it challenging.

4. Addressing your spirituality

No matter what you religious denomination or what your spiritual beliefs are, once thing for certain is that we are more than our physical bodies. We know from research that people that have a strong spiritual belief in something outside of themselves are happier and more content. Spirituality doesn’t need to be about praying to a certain god or figure, most importantly it is about reconnecting to your own spirit or soul. Doing this can give you your own sense of purpose, help to ground you and make you more comfortable in your own skin. To help nurture your spiritual self we recommend meditation and exploring this side of yourself with a spiritual/energetic healer that can help you to identify if there is anything that can be blocking your growth in this area.

We are complex beings with many layers of physical, emotional and spiritual blocks that can stop up from reaching our full potential and living a life that we love. It is through the exploration of these layers and removal of blocks that we grow and advance as human beings, so that we can truly experience life for all that it has to offer.

At Brisbane Natural Health we are passionate about helping people live a life that they love. We’ve developed memberships to specifically address all 4 of these areas and help you to not only feel better but to truly improve your quality of life. Call us on 07 3367 0337 to ask about how we can help you.

Emotional toxicity, anger and your liver.

If you dwell on your issues, the associated emotions can make you sick. Your body psychology has a physical function that translates to a consciousness function that will give you clues about how you are managing life at a particular time, or habits you are forming that begin a cycle of action and reaction.

For example, your liver synthesises essential hormones and mediators and manages reserves on the physical level, whereas psychologically it governs our ability to process our life and synthesise wisdom from experience, organise our lives and make plans. It’s virtually the same function but on a different level. It governs our strength and muscle tone to protect us and generates anger to alert us of invasions of our boundaries.

Let’s look at anger for example. Anger in the positive form generates movement or change away from something that is not good for us. Anger rises, moving up through the body. If you want to express it in a healthy way you need to be active especially movement of the upper body and arms to release the emotion. Things like gardening, going to batting cages, golf, dancing or going to boxing classes can really help.

Upper body movements like dancing, boxing and golf help to release pent-up anger from the body.

If you don’t express and release the emotion it will need to be stored. Emotions not expressed usually sit in the diaphragm before being moved to a storage location within the body. The gall bladder is located next to the liver and stores bile made in the liver to be released when needed to facilitate digestion. It gives us the energy to digest life and get things done, or to put a plan that began in the liver into action and it determines our ability to make decisions. It regulates strength and flexibility of our tendons so we can work in a flexible way. It gives us the courage to keep moving on our path. When our anger is not expressed in a healthy way it becomes pathological. If it is not expressed at all it moves into the gall bladder and becomes bitterness and resentment.

This close relationship of the liver and gall bladder is just one example of the connections between all of the body organs, endocrine glands and parts with our emotional states.

Your body, mind, and spirit are integral parts of the one thing, we are multidimensional. Our physical bodies are built to create emotions, they are an integral part of the human experience, so allowing yourself to feel the emotions in that moment of time and then letting them go will allow for a much healthier experience.

How to let your emotions go

Releasing emotions so that they are not stored in your body involves two steps – first you need to have awareness about your body and be constantly observing your thoughts and emotions. Without this conscious recognition, our emotions come and go without notice and are easily stored in the body, which can create dis-ease. Next, we need to have some tools to release them. Moving your body is a great way, as mentioned above but it can also help to have a Holographic Kinetics healing session to help to shift the emotions. This kind of emotional release is a powerful way to shed any emotions that don’t serve you so that you can live your life to your fullest potential.

Other therapies like hypnotherapy, life line technique and kinesiology can also help to move emotional congestion. Every person benefits from having these types of therapies now and then to remove any layers of emotional stagnation that can be affecting your physiology and your life.

Cycles Of Similarity… Repeating Patterns

Do you notice that in certain situations you have a given reaction that you just can’t change?

Some people will do anything to avoid conflict, even allowing their own feelings or rights to be quashed or ignored in order to avoid upsetting the apple cart. Many people notice they attract the same types of relationships and can’t work out why. Others seem to sabotage their own actions or desires for change, working really hard towards a goal and then throwing it away by an action or inaction, often knowingly or for no apparent reason and then having to start again. Emotional eating is a pattern of destructive behaviour also known as self-sabotage, especially for someone trying to lose weight or improve their health and fitness. Other times similar things keep occurring that seem to be unrelated but when viewed together are the same. Things like a series of car accidents or something where the outcome is the same but the mode of delivery may differ.

Sometimes we can’t figure out why it is that we do what we do, but we need to look deeper.

All of these are examples of what is called cycles of similarity. To understand this a bit more it helps to know about time.

Actions and reactions affect us like a pendulum we swing from action to reaction and once this is set into play it keeps swinging. How does that look? A partner makes a comment about something we are working on. We react emotionally in that moment of time. Action-Reaction. Picture this pendulum, swinging from left to right. It is stuck in time, meaning it has build up this momentum of swinging therefore, it cannot change direction of its own accord, the pattern is set. A reaction is still a reaction even if we don’t outwardly express it and even if we think about it later and decide to let it go, because later is a different moment in time.

Time is not linear as we tend to perceive it. It helps us in our day-to-day lives to see it that way so that we organise ourselves to meet deadlines and stick to our routines but time is actually cyclic. We have a past, a present and a future that moves from beginning to end like a circle but in a spiral, kind of like a slinky stretched out.

A reaction takes place at one point in time and locked in there and then as time loops back around going past this same spot the same thing repeats again at that point.

You can even complicate matters by having a spattering of emotions attached to this reaction, which then spurn their own moments in time linked to similar issues where you felt the same emotion! Multiply that out time after time and you can start creating some issues in the long term.

If we don’t deal with past emotions, they can present themselves in your life over and over.

It is not impossible to fix though and because time loops giving these cycles of similarity then you can trace the effects on the person in present day back to an original cause.

Why can’t we just work on the issue in the present day, why is looking at the past important?

Visualise a lovely garden with a hose turned on watering the garden.

If you come back to the garden after a time to find the garden flooded and you begin to fix up the plants and empty out some pockets of water here and there and add some more soil, it will look nice for a little bit and then it will become flooded again. You need to turn off the tap so the hose stops flooding the garden. The tap is the source of the problem, the original cause of the effect. The flooded garden is the effect. By only treating the affected parts you will only have so much success until the next time the issue creeps back in.

Once you deal with the original cause you can then go back to the garden and tidy it up the effect more efficiently.

This is a really good way to look at why emotional wellness is a key aspect of any type of healing journey.

Are you a highly sensitive person?

We all have our gifts and we all have our challenges – often they are one and the same thing.

Some of us are exceptionally good at creating beauty – whether that is a beautiful experience or a thing of beauty. These people are great visionaries, they know exactly what they want to create; they know all the details that need to come together to create that vision. They can sometimes be referred to as ‘Control Freaks’ as they can have trouble delegating or even allowing others to help. They can be very sensitive to criticism, not that they can’t handle it, but rather that they are already very self-critical. In fact they are often perfectionists and never really satisfied with their own efforts. So they are already providing all the criticism and when someone else notices that something is not perfect, it hurts!

Part of this ability to create beauty is a sensitivity and as is always the case in Chinese Medicine, the sensitivity applies to all dimensions of life. So these people, as well as being sensitive to the details and how things come together to create beauty, are also energetically sensitive. They may be particularly sensitive to foods or toxins or pharmaceuticals. They may pick up on someone else’s feelings and be driven to wanting to make that person feel better. They may be sensitive to energy of spaces. They may also be sensitive to energies from other realms.

Now these are ALL extraordinary gifts but if that energy is overwhelming – if the lines become blurred between what is their own energetic stuff and what is not theirs – then this can feel like anything BUT a gift!!!

The wisdom from Chinese Medicine allows us to see that the strengths of this sensitivity are also its challenges. Just to know this alone can help and then to focus on the light of this quality rather than the shadow.

A balanced life

As in Chinese Medicine, sensitivity applies to all dimensions of life.

If this sounds like you and you sometimes feel overwhelmed by your sensitivity, there are a few things you can do. The aim of the game is to befriend your sensitivity. You can’t hate something away, but you can LOVE it into balance.

RITUAL 1

One thing to try is simply expanding and contracting your energy. After all, you, more than any of us, know that we do not end with our skin! Imagine you are standing in a large hall and at the other end of the hall is someone you love. Someone who makes you feel safe. Take a deep breath and close your eyes. Create that image in your minds eye; then expand your energy out to reach that person that you love. It is safe for your energy to connect with theirs. Enjoy that feeling – soak up that feeling.

Then do the opposite and imagine someone you dislike at the other end of the hall. Contract your energy, bring it in close around you; to protect you; set that boundary; don’t allow your energy to connect with that other person.

As you play with this concept you get better and better at either allowing your energy to mix or protecting your energy. It’s just like a muscle at the g – the more you use it the stronger and more flexible it becomes.

RITUAL 2

Here is another simple ritual you may like – to define and protect your boundaries and to stop negative energies from invading your space.

When you wake up in the morning and stand up feet on the ground and stretch both arms out in front of you, like you are pushing something away and affirm to the world I can see you better over there’. Then pushing each arm out to your sides in the same way, say out loud, I will not get caught between a rock and a hard place’.

Say it and mean it!!

Then pushing both hands down to the ground, I hold down the rising tide’.

Pushing both hands up from your shoulders to the sky, I release the weight of the world from my shoulders’.

And finally, tell the universe to get off your back!

You have covered the energy around you in all six directions and created the physical, emotional and energetic space you need. A simple time efficient ritual that is based on prevention is easier than a cure.

There are lots of ways to ground your energy; these are just two simple options. It’s important to ensure your subconscious mind is supportive of your healthy energetic boundaries. PSYCH-K and hypnotherapy are powerful ways to connect to your subconscious and update the software that runs your mind. Remember your sensitivity is a beautiful part of who you are.

What is Bodytalk?

Bodytalk is a comprehensive healthcare system based on energy medicine that looks to restore internal communication in the body and thus, restoring health by focusing on the cause rather than the symptom.

Bodytalk is based on the premise that the body can heal itself just as long as internal lines of communication remain intact. Internal lines of communication means our hormonal, neurological, energetic, circulatory systems and so forth.

Stress can cause these internal communications to become compromised and thus create disease. Stress to the body can mean a variety of things. There are external stressors such as work, family, finances, deadlines etc. Then you can have internal stressors such as acute or chronic health conditions, emotional blockages/build up, trauma, your dietary practices etc.

Any one of these types of stress alone or even in combination will have some effect on the body’s lines of communication, whether in the short term or over a period of time. The body already has a number of daily tasks to perform in an order of priority. It is not so hard to imagine that it can be unable to complete all of these tasks efficiently if the system is not working at an optimum level.

Stress

Stress can cause internal communications to become compromised thus causing disease.

Bodytalk practitioners use a subtle form of biofeedback to locate these areas of stress and mis-communication. These areas of focus are in order of priority for the overall function of the body. Each Bodytalk session has a cumulative health effect on the body meaning that subsequent sessions are building upon the progress of the previous session rather than starting again. The practitioner will build a formula of links from the Protocol chart that form an energetic circuit and when ready, will use a series of non-invasive techniques with tapping. Tapping on the head tells the brain to make the repair to the circuit and tapping on the heart stores the information.

To ensure the best outcome for the client, built-in questioning at every session includes queries for referrals to another practitioner or modality, any changes to diet or lifestyle at home are required and if or when the client may return for follow up treatment.

An offshoot to the Bodytalk system is Veltheim Method Lymphatic Drainage (VMLD) – a relaxing, safe and effective technique to support the lymphatic system. This in turn impacts the immune system, the organs, hormones and circulation.

Our lymph system serves every cell of the body so poor drainage has far reaching effects.

This type of treatment can reduce swelling, helps the body to drain toxins and cell wastes, improve arthritic symptoms, joint pain and period pain.

It is a simple and relaxing treatment that can be done over clothes and even off the body where we will look at emotional and energetic blockages that are impacting normal lymph circulation.
