What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is one of the oldest healing systems on earth, originating in China thousands of years ago. It works by stimulating your meridians and particular points on the body with fine needles to stimulate your innate healing response and supporting your body to come back into balance. At Shift at Brisbane Natural Health we have a specialist team of acupuncturists with years of experience.

Treatment
There may be times when your therapist may need to use discomfort to get a result during treatment. This is like getting into a knot during a deep tissue massage. Your acupuncturist will always communicate this to you and often, this small amount of pain will lead to less pain for you moving forward.

How acupuncture works
The art of acupuncture involves the insertion of fine sterile needles into specific locations, to stimulate the body to heal itself. For more on how acupuncture works read below, or head here.
Your first appointment
At your initial appointment, your acupuncturist will use traditional diagnostic techniques to assess your health. They may look at your tongue or feel your pulse and touch areas of your body to look for tightness and tenderness, which will guide them in which points they will use in treatment. They are looking for dysfunction and blockages in your energy pathways or Qi (Chi), that may be causing illness.
During the treatment
The acupuncture treatment will help your body to balance, right there on the table but also for some time afterwards. It is very common for our clients to notice changes right away on the table, even before they have left the clinic. As you begin your treatment process the body begins to renew and regenerate, and your symptoms begin to reduce.
After your visit
There are many different types of acupuncture – ranging from relaxing to ouchy-ouchy. At Shift at Brisbane Natural Health we want you to leave feeling like you’re walking on a cloud, so we choose to provide gentle acupuncture only.
After your appointment you will feel relaxed and calm and ready to face the rest of your day.

No, it is important to know that acupuncture and dry needling are two very distinct modalities.
Dry needling is based upon the western medicine paradigm. It is used for soft tissue correction, which involves inserting extremely fine and painless needles into muscle fibres, causing a local twitch response. This, in turn, helps to deactivate and resolve trigger points in the muscle and release constriction. Many health professionals use dry needling as a method for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain, including myotherapists, physiotherapists, podiatrists and even some GPs.
Acupuncture, on the other hand, is based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine and the stimulation of Qi (pronounce Chi). Acupuncture diagnoses using complex theories, meaning only a qualified and registered Acupuncturist or Chinese Medicine practitioner can treat with acupuncture.
Yes, acupuncture complements other treatments and therapies quite well. You can have acupuncture alongside your naturopathic care or if you also have massage or physiotherapy. Acupuncture is safe while pregnant, while in recovery and also in conjunction with medications. Be sure to tell your acupuncturist what other treatments you are having so that they can complement them.
Your acupuncturist will take your medical history and find out what medicines you are taking, as well as any other treatments you’re receiving so that it complements what you are already doing. Shift at Brisbane Natural Health is a collaborative practice and we like to work collectively with other health modalities to ensure the best outcome for you.
