Hypnosis and Habits

Whenever we find ourselves embarking on a new journey towards our goals, it always seems to begin with a set of intentions that mirror the very best part of ourselves and our greatest hopes and dreams. Often these steps can start strong but life can get in the way and it can be easy to sometimes let these best intentions fall by the wayside and we blame a lack of motivation or busy-ness or another external factor getting in the way.

While setting a clear intention is a critical step for achieving goals and even manifesting desires, in order to make this intention an action and then turn the action into an ingrained healthy habit that serves us well, we need to practice repetition.  It is here that the skilled use of hypnosis can greatly speed up the process of forming new healthy habits.

Experiencing a mental rehearsal

Your subconscious cannot tell the difference between what is real and what is vividly imagined. This means if we are able to be guided through a mental rehearsal of the steps required to reach our goals, then we have already been able to practice how it might play out and how good you can feel.

Hypnosis plays with time distortion. I can help somebody acquire the virtual experience of how they would feel had they followed the steps towards creating a healthy habit and then sustained this healthy habit for a period of time. If we are able to visualise how we would think, look and feel as if we had already achieved our goal then we start feeling the emotional benefits immediately. This might be linked with pride and achievement, gratitude, satisfaction, and building self-esteem.

This might be activated by creating a virtual experience. For example, I once helped a woman whose habit of drinking a bottle of wine every night was impacting her health and happiness.  It took around thirty minutes with her deeply hypnotised to help her see herself in her evenings feeling cool, calm and confident without a glass of wine. We then worked on the ‘virtual’ experience of weeks and months of exercising daily, waking up feeling fresh and motivated, clear and happy. I talked about how, “one day, this day will be months and years ago”. I then got her to feel as if he had already experienced all this future time as a natural and easy light drinker. I suggested he experience seasons, birthdays, anniversaries, Christmases, all as a light drinker, going through typical days without even thinking about it. By the time she came out of the trance, she felt as if his new habit wasn’t ‘new’ at all, and she had been free of this old habit and it’s debilitating side effects. And this is how we can encourage new healthy habits in an amazingly accelerated way.

It is a surprisingly powerful technique to practice hypnotically how a ‘typical day’ in your mind might play out with this new positive habit, and then many such days until we reach the point where the habit is truly ‘second nature’.

At Brisbane Natural Health we are deeply committed to supporting our people on a health journey that is much more than symptom reduction – it is about holistic care that includes the emotional support to take enables people to transcend their old stories and believe they feel different and be different. I like to offer my clients the experience inwardly of what it’s like to feel that a new positive habit is long-standing and deeply embedded.

This approach has been validated by research as well as our own clinical experience.

A famous piece of research showed that mental rehearsal wires the brain in the same way as actual rehearsal. Basketball players who practised a new move in their minds, without actually doing it for real, were able to accomplish the move as well as – and often even better than – players who only practised it for real. This is because you can always do something ‘perfectly’ in your mind. So the new habitual skill was acquired purely through hypnotic means.

So practising that new basketball move or that new piano piece in your mind, with your eyes closed, even though you might be miles from a basketball court or a piano keyboard, can help you get better at those activities because you are deepening the right neuronal pathways. A new habit, any new habit, can and (I think) should be practised mentally to speed up the process of making it automatic. And the best way to practise something mentally is to learn how these habits can be real while under hypnosis.

Stress, Balance and Hypnosis

Feeling overwhelmed with never-ending to-do lists? Ruminating about problems at work? Doubting your ability to do the job? Sleeping badly? Not having the time to devote to your family? Are you drinking too much, not getting enough exercise…?

These are classic signs of modern-day stress.  Work stress. Home stress.  Health stress. –All have an effect and can nudge us towards coping mechanisms that are not always helpful.  More people are suffering from greater degrees of stress and not dealing with it effectively. Whether it’s junk food, alcohol or binge TV, we have become expert at not confronting the real issues at hand, resulting in an overloaded mind and body.

Understanding our stress, recognising its numerous symptoms and acquiring tools to process and deal with it is a vital part of managing the balancing act of work, life and family. Yet it is not always easy. More and more we are expecting to succeed in this juggling act and look good doing it on our social media platforms. It’s no wonder we develop unrealistic expectations!

One of the best antidotes to stress is to learn how to quieten our inner-critic and allow ourselves a healthy dose of self-compassion.  Learning to be kinder to ourselves, to not hold ourselves to harsh standards and to face up to past hurts and rejections are some of the keys to coping better in the workplace and in our relationships.

Learning to say “no” to other people’s demands on us is another area where we can begin to take back control. Sometimes when we involve ourselves in other people’s dramas, it adds to our own load of stress. Always putting others first and taking undue responsibility for other people’s problems can quite dramatically erode our own wellbeing.

Whether the stresses come from internal or external sources, are big or small, isolated in time or accumulated from countless repetition over the years, they can have a long-lasting and damaging effect.

We know that to maintain a healthy mind and body we need healthy food, plenty of sleep and regular exercise. However, when faced with the many and varied stresses noted above we need more. There can be real and tangible benefit from learning specific skills and developing our own tools to manage the stress in our lives.

Clinical Hypnotherapy at Brisbane Natural Health addresses the relationship between stress and your symptoms and can offer the tools to deal with your stress more effectively.

Hypnosis can allow you to learn the art of calm and how to regulate your stress responses. Hypnosis can help you to find different and more helpful perspectives, resolve inner-conflict and learn to manage and even to escape the often debilitating results of stress on the mind and body.

Just one session of clinical hypnotherapy can bring you benefit. One session can allow you to feel the myriad benefits of stress release experienced through your whole body. It can allow you to tap into your own inner resources to learn different and more helpful ways of managing the complexities of life.

Kristina Nott – Kinesiologist and Holographic Kinetics Practitioner

Kristina Nott is a kinesiologist and Holographic Kinetics Practitioner. After many years as an educator and more recently mother of two she has been studying and practicing her personal passion in maintaining health and wellness for the last 5 years.

Through her own health issues, her children’s and her mothers experience with cancer she developed a strong desire to know why?? and to use techniques that were in harmony with the body, supporting wellness from the inside – out on every level.

After maintaining her children’s health and well-being through mostly naturopathy, homeopathy and kinesiology it was kinesiology and the amazing technique of muscle monitoring that captivated her the most. Watching the practitioner communicate with her children’s subconscious mind to access the cause of their issue within their own body was, she felt, ‘miraculous’ and made complete sense to her.

Utilising this biofeedback technique discovered over 100 years ago Kinesiology engages Western and Eastern science, knowledge and understanding in structure, physiology, biochemistry, emotion and energy to access priority factors and stress blocking balance.

After experiencing Holographic Kinetics and the deeper levels of Cause and Effect at the level of Spirit, her studies quickly expanded into this powerful field also.

Kristina has found these modalities highly successful in facilitating deep healing and change with physical and emotional issues. Pain, digestive issues, nutritional imbalance, toxicity, Immune System Health, stress, depression, fatigue, sleep issues, relationship issues, emotional issues and disempowering recurring patterns list some of the possible issues suitable for the modalities she offers.

She is passionate about supporting and facilitating health and wellness for clients who are keen to access the cause of their issue and take responsibility for their thoughts, words and actions in creating the change they seek.

Are you a highly sensitive person?

We all have our gifts and we all have our challenges – often they are one and the same thing.

Some of us are exceptionally good at creating beauty – whether that is a beautiful experience or a thing of beauty. These people are great visionaries, they know exactly what they want to create; they know all the details that need to come together to create that vision. They can sometimes be referred to as ‘Control Freaks’ as they can have trouble delegating or even allowing others to help. They can be very sensitive to criticism, not that they can’t handle it, but rather that they are already very self-critical. In fact they are often perfectionists and never really satisfied with their own efforts. So they are already providing all the criticism and when someone else notices that something is not perfect, it hurts!

Part of this ability to create beauty is a sensitivity and as is always the case in Chinese Medicine, the sensitivity applies to all dimensions of life. So these people, as well as being sensitive to the details and how things come together to create beauty, are also energetically sensitive. They may be particularly sensitive to foods or toxins or pharmaceuticals. They may pick up on someone else’s feelings and be driven to wanting to make that person feel better. They may be sensitive to energy of spaces. They may also be sensitive to energies from other realms.

Now these are ALL extraordinary gifts but if that energy is overwhelming – if the lines become blurred between what is their own energetic stuff and what is not theirs – then this can feel like anything BUT a gift!!!

The wisdom from Chinese Medicine allows us to see that the strengths of this sensitivity are also its challenges. Just to know this alone can help and then to focus on the light of this quality rather than the shadow.

A balanced life

As in Chinese Medicine, sensitivity applies to all dimensions of life.

If this sounds like you and you sometimes feel overwhelmed by your sensitivity, there are a few things you can do. The aim of the game is to befriend your sensitivity. You can’t hate something away, but you can LOVE it into balance.

RITUAL 1

One thing to try is simply expanding and contracting your energy. After all, you, more than any of us, know that we do not end with our skin! Imagine you are standing in a large hall and at the other end of the hall is someone you love. Someone who makes you feel safe. Take a deep breath and close your eyes. Create that image in your minds eye; then expand your energy out to reach that person that you love. It is safe for your energy to connect with theirs. Enjoy that feeling – soak up that feeling.

Then do the opposite and imagine someone you dislike at the other end of the hall. Contract your energy, bring it in close around you; to protect you; set that boundary; don’t allow your energy to connect with that other person.

As you play with this concept you get better and better at either allowing your energy to mix or protecting your energy. It’s just like a muscle at the g – the more you use it the stronger and more flexible it becomes.

RITUAL 2

Here is another simple ritual you may like – to define and protect your boundaries and to stop negative energies from invading your space.

When you wake up in the morning and stand up feet on the ground and stretch both arms out in front of you, like you are pushing something away and affirm to the world I can see you better over there’. Then pushing each arm out to your sides in the same way, say out loud, I will not get caught between a rock and a hard place’.

Say it and mean it!!

Then pushing both hands down to the ground, I hold down the rising tide’.

Pushing both hands up from your shoulders to the sky, I release the weight of the world from my shoulders’.

And finally, tell the universe to get off your back!

You have covered the energy around you in all six directions and created the physical, emotional and energetic space you need. A simple time efficient ritual that is based on prevention is easier than a cure.

There are lots of ways to ground your energy; these are just two simple options. It’s important to ensure your subconscious mind is supportive of your healthy energetic boundaries. PSYCH-K and hypnotherapy are powerful ways to connect to your subconscious and update the software that runs your mind. Remember your sensitivity is a beautiful part of who you are.

The Heart Protector

The Chinese believe we have an extra organ called The Heart Protector.

It’s like an imaginary gate around our hearts. When we are in balance the gate is slightly open, allowing us time to decide if we trust someone or something into our heart or not.

It is not just about romance, everything is connected, so it may be a business relationship or any other decision that we need to make.

If we choose not to let a person or situation into our heart then we can close the gate and protect our heart. Or if we feel safe then we can open the gate and allow that situation in to our heart.

In Chinese Medicine the heart is known as The Emperor. It is literally the heart of all our abundant richness and resources. The Emperor is the keeper of all things beautiful.

The General or the Emperor?

Who do you want to give the power to…The General or The Emperor?

Our heart is where we nurture our authentic self, our truth. It is where we feel. But sometimes the Emperor is distracted by The General. You guessed it – the General is our mind. We can overthink things and lose connection to how we feel about something. Western thinking is very much about that we need to ‘do something’ or ‘to fix the situation’ so it can be very easy to get stuck in our thoughts.

Sure it’s important to be able to analyse and think, and we all need our General, but as ancient Chinese wisdom would ask ‘Who do you want to give the power to…The General or The Emperor?’

When we give too much power to The General we shut ourselves off from our feelings. We lose touch with our authentic self. We forget what lights us up and in the extreme may even lose our passion for life.

Many ancient and modern philosophers talk about the journey from the head to the heart being the longest journey. If you feel disconnected from your heart you are not alone, over 90% of people are said to have excessive energetic protection around their hearts.

But the good news is the power of the subconscious mind can help you gently reconnect to all your richness and resources. Your subconscious loves you to bits…it’s all there waiting for you.

Compassion

Australia has just hosted a visit from The Dalai Lama. He spoke around the country and even hosted retreats for some very lucky people. Born in 1935 Tenzin Gyatso, the current and 14th Dalai Lama was throned in 1940 at the age of 5 and this year turns 80. He symbolises compassion and in fact The Dalai Lama is believed to be an incarnation of the Bodhisattva of Compassion.

So not surprisingly his message is all about compassion.

We all know and use the word compassion – but what exactly is it? It can be described essentially as a deep feeling of sympathy for a person who is experiencing physical, emotional or spiritual misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering.

So we know what it is, but how do we apply it?

We just have to watch the news to see misfortune on a global and national scale, let alone what is happening closer to our own world. So how can we possibly alleviate suffering?

As the Dalai Lama explained compassion starts with ourselves. Then it spreads out to our family and close friends…our workplace…then it spreads out to strangers we might meet in our day (yes even the ones that annoy the hell out of us)…then into the community we live…the city we live in and so unless we can show ourselves compassion then we cannot truly show compassion to others. We need to walk the walk and talk the talk. We have an effect by demonstrating compassion within our community. This means prioritising your self-care first and foremost. When you give to yourself you expand your potential to give to others and you prevent yourself from burring out.

It can be viewed as selfish and undesirable to put yourself before others, but I would suggest there is a quality called healthy selfishness and that it is very desirable. What constitutes your healthy selfishness may be different from another person, but the common not negotiable to self-care is the quality of the thoughts that you feed your mind.

Dalai Lama

Compassion starts with ourselves: Dalai Lama

Unless that voice in your head treats you better than your best friend then there is room to improve those thoughts. Change does NOT come about because we hate an aspect of ourselves. Those phrases & criticisms that seem to be on a negative loop in our head are repeated so often that they become our beliefs. And our beliefs become our reality!

Let’s just think about that for a minute…you repeatedly tell yourself ‘you’re not good enough’ and that thought is absorbed into your subconscious. That thought is now a belief. That belief has a vibrational energy and it is always looking for a match to prove to you how perfect and right you are!

Change comes from compassion. By being compassionate and loving to ourselves we attract compassion and love around us. That belief of compassion has a vibrational energy that is always looking for a match to show you how perfect and right you are!!

The place to start with compassion is with yourself. Do you have emotional baggage that is heavy to carry around? Is there grief or anger that your subconscious mind is holding onto? Is it time for you to transform your inner critic into your number one fan?

Working with the subconscious mind you can update the programs that run your life NOW!

Change doesn’t need to be hard and it doesn’t need to take a long time.

Self-sabotage

Why do we repeatedly do the stuff we know we don’t want to do?

You wanted to give up chocolate and there you were a couple of days later sneaking a square or two, which turns into a row or two! GRRRR don’t go there!!

You wanted to drink less wine. It was going okay at the start of the week but then you had a stressful day at work and you couldn’t wait to pour a wine that evening. It felt so good you had another and another.

Even more annoying is that the answer is really simple – we repeatedly do the stuff we know we don’t want to do because our subconscious is SO powerful.

The subconscious mind makes up 95% of our mind, which means that the conscious mind – yes the one that we think is so clever – is just 5%! And to make matters worse we operate out of our subconscious mind 95% of the time.

If there is a limiting belief, a trapped emotion or an unwanted habit in our subconscious mind it will win out over our conscious thoughts EVERY time. It’s a no-brainer; 95% versus 5% – the little guy doesn’t stand a chance.

Self sabotage

If you think you have no willpower, the universe will prove it to you time and time again.

The subconscious mind is the habitual mind. It downloads habits and patterns directly. It’s great for driving the car without thinking about it and we don’t have to consciously remember to breathe – especially whilst we are asleep. There are a lot of positives to these downloads.

To compound the downloaded patterns and habits our thoughts are incredibly powerful. Say you have trouble with your weight – you diet and lose weight and then a little while later the wheels fall off and you put on more weight. This yo-yoing keeps happening throughout your life. Then you start to think ‘Sure I can lose weight, but I always put it back on and then some’ so that belief sinks into your mind and becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. The belief that it’s hard for you to keep weight off becomes your reality.

So that’s the problem, but what about the solution? Here we are talking about the power of the mind so we should be ridiculously optimistic and surrounded by positive affirmations, right? What’s with all this limiting, negative chat?

Your subconscious loves you unconditionally. All it wants to do is keep you alive and show you how clever you are. If you think you have no willpower, the universe will prove it to you time and time again. It just wants to show you that you are right. If you think you don’t deserve to be successful your subconscious will attract experiences to back that thought up! Henry Ford said it best when he said ‘Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right’.

So what we need here is to have the subconscious mind on board with our conscious goals and wishes. If both minds are aligned then our thoughts, beliefs and patterns are powerful in the way that we want them to be.

The trick is that these two minds don’t speak exactly the same language. You need to translate your chosen beliefs into a language the subconscious mind can understand. When it truly hears what you are asking, the subconscious mind is SUPER co-operative! Remember it just wants to make you happy and show you how clever you are. So get it on board with your goals and wishes and your potential is absolutely limitless.

A very effective way to communicate to your subconscious is using PSYCH-K, a modality that combines psychology, and all your beliefs, with kinesiology or muscle testing. It balances your chosen beliefs into whole brained state making them powerful and working for you.

Why see a hypnotherapist at BNH?

If you are trying to make changes without the power of your subconscious mind then you are making your life a whole lot harder than it needs to be!

Your subconscious mind makes up 95% and your conscious mind is just 5% of your mind! If you can access the power of your subconscious mind why wouldn’t you? Working with the subconscious is a holistic, safe and powerful way to make lasting change.

We consciously use 5% of our minds and 95% is subconscious. Changing the subconscious has a huge impact on how you feel.

About the Subconscious Mind

The subconscious mind uses a different language to the conscious mind. The subconscious is the habitual mind where patterns are laid down – and played back whenever they are needed or triggered. The conscious mind is the analytical mind.

It is the subconscious mind that keeps you alive. So that when you sleep at night you remember to breath and all those other vital functions. Believe it or not your subconscious mind LOVES you & just wants the best for you.

But the subconscious speaks a different language to the conscious mind, so you need to speak the language of the subconscious to be able to update any limiting beliefs or undesired habits. Otherwise your message doesn’t get through to the subconscious or worse still it can be heard as the opposite of what you meant!

All your subconscious wants is for you to be safe and happy and alive. But it doesn’t analyse your beliefs and habits. Sometimes things happen in life and the emotions, patterns and beliefs that form your response can get stuck in your body or your subconscious. Most likely they served you at the time…but they may have out stayed their purpose.

The good news is that change doesn’t need to be difficult! There are several ways to access the power of your subconscious mind and update the software that no longer serves you. Our hypnotherapist Jan Sky has over 20 years experience in ‘subconscious whispering’, helping to identify what is driving your thoughts and behaviors so you release what you don’t need and move forward with your life.

As well as using hypnotherapy Jan can use counseling or coaching in her sessions with you. It’s about identifying what will give you the best results and developing a treatment pathway to get you there.

It really doesn’t matter what you want to change, working with the subconscious can literally empower anything! The more well known reasons for using hypnotherapy include:

  • Weight management
  • Fears and phobias
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Depression
  • Smoking
  • Lack of motivation
  • Low self confidence
    …but the list is limitless!

If you’re ready to change your mind to change your life, call us on 3367 0337 to book a hypnotherapy appointment at our Brisbane clinic today.

Are you ruled by The Emperor or The General?

Are you one of those people whose mind is always full? You have plan A and then you have plan B just in case A doesn’t work out. You are such a great thinker…all your energy goes into thinking. At times it is exhausting, and there is no space in your mind for rest or stillness.

Even the language you use reflects this great power to think your way out of any situation. You tend to say ‘I think’ or ‘I know’ rather than ‘I feel’ or ‘I sense’. You are a doer – you can make anything happen and you can make it happen fast. You more than likely experience a sense of frustration if things don’t happen quickly enough for your liking.

You can be irritated if others slow things down and get up in their emotional response. You like to approach things with your logical linear thinking style and others can sometimes find that very direct and maybe even intimidating. That’s not your intent – you just want to get on and make the situation better. You can be a warrior; an agent for positive change.

Sometimes you can be a bit judgemental. It’s not that you mean to judge people but your mind works at such a speed that you may have summed someone up very quickly. And you may well be right, but there may also be occasions when with a little more time, you see a different aspect of that person and you need to modify your original character assessment.

The Chinese call the mind The General. We all need The General – at times we need protection; at times we need rules and at times we need this focus and discipline. Someone with this busy mind has a very powerful General indeed.

The Chinese refer to the Heart as The Emperor. The heart is where our consciousness resides. When we come from the heart, with The Emperor, there is a sense of majesty, of tradition, of richness and beauty. We all also need The Emperor, so it becomes about whom we give our power to. Do we want our life and decisions to be ruled by The General or do we want to be ruled by The Emperor?

Do we want to live dominated by rules and regulations or by richness and beauty? The General can be very powerful and some of us can lose our connection to our heart without even realising. We are so busy doing, that we forget to feel.

What to do if this feels like you?

Well anything that you can do to allow even a small space into your busy mind can help. Make a list so you don’t need to hold onto those things in your mind any longer. Physical exercise is a healthy way for The General to release any built up frustration or anger.

A walk in nature will also soothe The General and promote some stillness into his mind. The power of deep diaphragmatic breathing can never be overstated, so taking a few deep breaths as you wait at a red light can be a great habit to adopt. This signals the body that you are safe and also allows a moment of respite from all those thoughts.

Change is powerful when it is subtle and also imperceptible. The new way is absorbed before the amygdala (the part of the brain that processes emotions) has a chance to question or reject the new way. By creating that small space in your mind, you allow your energy to come into your heart and give the ultimate power to The Emperor.
